Description
- Bacterial infections: Manjishtha has been reported to have significant anti-bacterial activity, against Gram +ve, as well as, Gram -ve bacteria.
- It is thus useful in the management of varios bacterial infections, especially urinary, respiratory, skin, and pelvic infections.
- Acne: Manjishtha is quite useful in the management of acne. It acts in two ways –
- It inhibits the growth of the bacteria resulting in acne; and
- It inhibits the inflammatory mediators (cytikones) resulting in inflammation in the skin.
- Cancer: Cyclic hexapeptides and quinones in Manjishtha possesses anti-mutagenic activity, thereby inhibiting the multiplication and growth of cancer cells.
- It is thus useful as a supportive drug in the management of cancer.
- Blood thinner: Manjishtha prevents the activation and aggregation of platelets, thereby preventing the formation of thromus.
- It is therefore quite useful in diseases where thinning of blood is desirable, like CAD, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, etc.
- Calcium channel blocker: Manjishtha exhibits spasmolytic activity similar to that of verapamil suggestive of presence of calcium channel blocker- like constituent(s) (Gilani et al., 1994).
- It can therefore be used in hypertension and angina.
- Diabetes: Manjishtha has been reported to lower raised blood sugar, probably by enhancing tissue sensitivity to insulin
- It can therefore be used in the management of diabetes and its complications (Somani et al., 2006).
- Liver disorders: Manjishtha protects the liver against various toxins.
- It can therefore be used in various liver diseases, including viral and toxic hepatitis.
- Viral infection: Manjishtha has been seen to inhibit viral replication.
- It can therefore be used in the management of various viral infections.
- Inflammatory & Painful diseases: Manjishtha has been seen to inhibit the inflammatory mediators (cytokines).
- It is therefore used in the management of various inflammatory and painful diseases in the joints, skin, Eye, ENT, dental, pelvic organs, anorectal regions, etc.
